Deep Blue Sea - How'd They Do That?
Sharks can't swim backwards. It's not a matter of intelligence, but rather physical impossibility. Their fins are not flexible like other fish. They can go backwards by stopping and falling backwards, but the sharks in this movie clearly don't do that.
It's remotely possible the sharks were genetically modified to swim backwards, but that doesn't explain why the scientists are so surprised that the sharks can go backwards, or why they don't explain it to Jackson's character when he asks about it.

It's not swimming backwards, it's pushing itself away from the grating

No, it is swimming backwards. Even Laura(?) asked how they could swim backwards. If you watch closely, you can see they only run into the grating to break a camera, then swim backwards to get away from it.

Mr.Glass: I might be wrong, but in the movie, don't they explicitly say that they are swimming backwards? I also think it might be a little hard for them, especially if they cannot SWIM backwards, that they could use an unknown force to "push" themselves from the grating. The same muscles they would use to "push" themselves would be the same muscles used to swim backwards, if feasible...

Actually, the reason sharks can't swim backwards is because water would be forced into it's gills and drown it. But, they do say, "sharks can't swim backwards, it's physically impossible." They never explain why a smart shark can do something physically impossible for a normal shark to do. It has nothing to do with intelligence, you're right.

Again, watch the movie when they come at Carter and he raises the shotgun. That's the scene in question. In that scene they don't push off, and they don't kind of drift downwards and back (how sharks can kinda back up). They _swim backwards_ in a straight line from Carter's shotgun. Which is when Jackson's character comments on it, etc., etc.

I am pretty sure that they are trying to imply that these sharks are so smart that they have learned how to adapt their bodies so that they CAN swim backwards
