It could very well be that the craft was approaching the planet "upside down". But since there is no gravity in space, the orientation is entirely up to the pilot. So it could appear that the feature in question is pointing the in wrong direction.
Technically down is toward the center of gravity so in space where there is no gravity there is also no up or down therefore to say that the earth was (up)side-(down) is incorrect.
Without seeing this movie for maybe 4 years , i think that the person writing the slip up actualy means that it is mirror'd ,i did notce a mirror'd earth in a movie a couple years ago and cant remember which one .
