Not necessarily. My boyfriend's mother got pregnant with him when she was 14. If that was NOT a slip up, I think it's pretty good of them to show that not all families in movies are perfect.

Or it could be his daughter, but from another woman.

Actually, the older daughter is probably his from a previous marriage. He says that his wife is 31, but he looks to be about 10 years older himself. So he would be old enough to have a 16-year-old daughter. That's how I interpreted it.

Hey, smart guy, if you can do math right, 31 minus 16 is 15, not 14.

Sorry, but you are all wrong. First off, Craig T. Nelson says he is 33, so I don't think there is anything to the "previous marriage" theory. Secondly, Spielberg makes it kind of clear that both these characters are up and coming yuppies with shady pasts, evident by Carol Ann walking in on them getting stoned while Jo Beth Williams is relating the story of how she once passed out in the back of some dude's car when she was a teenager. This is not at all a slip-up, but part of the character development.

She did not "pass out as a teenager in the back of some 'dude's' car". The whole scene was talking about how she used to SLEEPWALK, and she woke up in the back of a guy's car. She never PASSED OUT. Did you miss the whole point of the conversation????
