Voice on the Radio, The (Caroline B. Cooney) - Hannah...Dead or Alive?
In the book before this one, "Whatever Happened to Janie?" Mr. Mollison visits the Springs and they talk about Hannah and what happened. He says that they need to find Hannah to prosecute her and he says, "Two years ago, Hannah Javenson was arrested in New York City. Her fingerprints are on file."
"The Voice On The Radio" takes place a year later. Near the end of the book, after Reeve and Janie have broken up, Lizzie comes to talk to Reeve. She tells him that she's found Hannah...her exact words were "The cult file notates her death five years ago." In other words, Hannah died two years before she was arrested!! So, is Hannah dead or not?

NOTE- the cult files NOTE her death. Hannah could have run away, leading the cult to believe that she was dead. doesn't mean she really IS dead.

And in the next book, What Janie Found, Janie considers contacting Hannah. She almost tries to do it. A good portion of the book revolves around that. And just how was she planning on finding someone who's five years dead? Ms. Cooney's an awesome writer, but perhaps she needs to improve her memory about these things!

I am not sure which book it is in I think it is in What Janie Found, but they discover Hannah is not dead. I think they found out they Janie's "father" was taking care of Hannah by giving her money. I think the book wanted you to put together that she wasn't dead even though the records said she was and that Janie's "father" was taking care of her expenses. So she wasn't really dead.

You must also remember that this book series is supposed to be confusing with different facts. Its a mystery - in mysteries people don't always gather correct info. And also, its a CONFUSING mystery - meant to be confusing and mysterious.

The fact that hannah could be dead is what is supposed to keep you guessing, to add to the thrill of the book. Is she dead? Did she fake her death? But actually, the fact that she was arrested TWO years ago, means that she couldn't have been found dead FIVE years ago, as Lizzie said. Her death was a fake, then, and the part that really had you in suspense, has an obvious answer. Genuine slip up!
