Outbreak - New Virus?
In the scene where General Ford and General McClintock are comparing the two samples of Motaba Virus (one from 1967, and the one from the present)the pictures of the virus are not new. They are in fact, pictures of the Ebola Virus. You can verify this by watching this scene, and then logging onto Encarta.com and search for Ebola. They will have a thumbnail picture of the virus (the 1967 virus picture is actually the same picture as Encarta's).

well actually, since the movie was about Ebola, obviously its going to be a picture of the Ebola virus...but also, that was supposed to be a new strand, thats why the old one is shown in Encarta, but the movie created a new one that was airborn.

I'm pretty sure the movie is based on a book called "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. The book is based on actual events relating to an outbreak of Ebola between 1967 & 1993 in Reston and D.C. They probably had to change the virus because of the intensification with bombing at the end and everything. I think they made this "slip up" simply as an obvious commentary or reference to the actual events that did occur.

Actually, the movie was not ABOUT Ebola but it was BASED ON Ebola. I live in Reston, VA and the "outbreak" here was of a new strain of Ebola - Ebola Reston. Ebola Reston does not have deadly effects in humans however -- only one human caught the disease, and he only had flu-like symptoms. If you want to learn more about Ebola Reston, read Richard Preston's book, The Hot Zone. Reston is much larger now than it was then -- 75,000 people and it is 23 miles from Washington, D.C., not 10 like the author states. The building that the outbreak happened in is still around, and it is now a day care center. Not that anybody cares.
