I'm glad someone else noticed this. Sometimes it is Lassie colored, sometimes it is black.

Not only are the dogs different colors, but they have different temperaments. The dark haired dog is the one they use to attack and growl at the bad guys/stunt men. The Lassie type looking dog is the one that is used near John Wayne & his two sons and seems placid.
