When they discover the wooden bowl, where they are digging the pool, it's upside down in the dirt. They pick up the bowl it is upside down, they turn it over and it is full of loose dirt, which they dump out.
I think they dumped dirt because when you get that low underground the water is very moist and packs up. It probably packed up inside the bowl and didn't fall out right after he lifted it out.
