In the scene where Riggs is at the Christmas tree lot, watch as he first draws his gun. When he unsheaths it it is silver, for the rest of the movie it is black.
He would have used his regular gun to shoot the drug dealers, but he didn't want to get it dirty putting bullets into those scumbags.
