Green Mile, The - A Sticky Slip Up!
An anachronism! In the scene where the guards tie up Percy and gag him, so they can take John Coffey out for the night, they use clear plastic packing tape to seal his mouth shut. The scene supposedly takes place in the 1930's back when the only tape available probably would have been butcher's tape, the type you have to slide through water before it will stick to the paper, but most people just used string to hold packages together. And to gag bad guys, they usually used a strip of cloth for a gag, especially since there was no such thing as clear plastic packing tape!!! [CLEAR SCOTCH TAPE WAS INVENTED IN 1930. DO SOME RESEARCH, INSTEAD OF ASSUMING.]

Do you know for a fact that it wasn't around in 1935? Can you tell me where you heard this?

I really wish people would do a little more research before they go and shoot their mouths off! Scotch tape was invented in 1930!

Yes, scotch tape was invented in 1930 (I have old photograph albums that prove that!) But the type of clear plastic packing tape they used in the movie wasn't around until decades later.

I agree with the above person(s). I mean I'm sure that the director looked into that before he shot that scene. Directors aren't as stupid as we think they are. Research your slip ups before you slip up!

You all seriuosly need to lighten up on the director on that one, just give him a break. I bet that not one of you could honestly say that there's no way you could make that mistake.

this film was set during the great depression 1920-1940 so its very very unlikely the film would be set in the 40's and paul edgecomb also says at the start that it was 1935 that jhon coffey arrived on his "mile" ;)
