When Edward Lyle (Gene Hackman) and Robert Dean (Will Smith) sit down for a meal in a local restaurant (after blowing up Daniel's fortress about 3/4 into the movie), Lyle tells about his background as supplying weapons to the Afghan rebels against the Sovjets untill the Iranians turned against them "over night" when the US Embassy in Tehran was occupied. The historic fact is that the embassy was occupied 7 weeks BEFORE the Sovjets invaded Afghanistan.
