At the beginning of the movie, Jake receives his Zippo lighter that has been in his property at Joliet for 3 years. Right after Elwood jumps the bridge, Jake takes the Zippo out of his jacket pocket and uses it to light his cigarette because he threw the car's lighter out of the window. Zippos are great lighters, but they won't hold fuel for three years!
