Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace - Bad Hair Day
Obi Wan's Rat Tail is located over his right ear. However, during the entire scene where Obi Wan is questioning Qui-Gon about "another pathetic life form", Obi Wan's Rat Tail is hanging over his left ear.
The scene with Obe-Wan's braid on the wrong side is due to the fact that the frame of flim was flipped during the editing process. It's just the explanation for the mistake - not the costumne designer's
I'd have to agree here.
his braid couldn't have been switched, due to the reason
he didn't have enough hair on his left side for a braid.
and obviusly they don't have any reason for dressing him with a wig for no reason.
however this very frame flip could be considered as a slip too :)
so you win it anyway...
I'm not too sure the frame was actually reversed. Look at Obi-Wan's robe; it's closed the right way (left over right). Also I'm fairly sure that his braid and ponytail were attachments, simillar to the ones that were sold around Holloween time last year. If you see some of the "making-of" footage, when Ewan McGregor and Ray Park are practicing their saber work, Ewan has his hair cut short with no braid or ponytail. I don't know if it was intentional or if he just tied one on the night before, but I thought it was pretty funny the first time I noticed it ( about the seventh time I watched the film ). Good eye.
Actually, I noticed this flub the first time I saw the movie. I knew I was going to go back to watch the movie several more times (9 total in theaters) so I made sure and checked it out. If you look closely, Ewan McGregor (sp?) has a small mole under his right eye. Therefore, by looking for this mole (which cannot move, unlike his robe), I determined that there actually was a switch. Whether or not it was intentional, I have no idea.
I agree that the make-up artist is at fault. I also noticed Ewans mole as an indicator of no mirror images. Plus the braid apparently doesn't only jump from the right side of his head to the left, but also from in front of and behind his ear.
This little slip-up is one of the many things I don't like about the movie. When I first saw it in the theater I noticed that not only did the braid switch sides, but it and the rest of Obi Wan's hair seemed to be different lengths in each scene. Some of my friends still deny that the braid magically changes, to me this is one of the more obvious mistakes in the movie. It might have something to do with the fact that I like Ewan McGregor and paid extra attention to his scenes.
Actually, if you get the DVD and listen to the director's commentary over the film, George Lucas talks about that. He said he "out-smarted himself". He thought he was going to flip the shot in editing, so he moved the braid to the other side of Obi Wan, but it turned out that they didn't flip the shot, and as a result he made a slip-up.
Ok...Ewan McGregor actually GREW the braid. If you're obsessive about him as much as I am, then you'd read interviews with him. During an interview, the interviewer asked what was his next movie. He said Ewan showed him the braid he had to grow out for the part.
