Forrest Gump - Super Fast Referee

During the movie there are a number of times where Forrest is running across the football field and no one can catch him. He is supposed to be so fast, but during one of these scenes you can see the referee easily keeping up with him!

So yes I do believe they mean he can run quickly. As for the Ref.'s there can be more then one. If you watch football at all there is always more then one on the sidelines running.
