As the cattle drive crosses the first river, Sean gets thrown from his horse into the river. He ends up in a swarm of cottonmouth snakes. It clearly shows him getting struck on the right side of his face by a snake, which sinks it's fangs in all the way. As he lay on the bank of the river dying, it clearly shows no fang marks on his face.
