When Harry, Ron, Seamus and others try to get into the Gryffindor common room the first time, the fat lady delays them with her "singing". When she finally admits them, the portrait swings inward. When it cuts to Harry and Seamus walking in, you can see that the painting is not protruding into the common room, but rather outside into the stairwell.
