At the very beginning of the movie they show how the Ring comes in Gollums posession. There is the other guy, the Deagol, whom Gollum kills. Well, but at the end of the movie, as the hobbits return to Shire and go to the pub, there he is again - carrying a pumpkin and looking as alive as ever!
