At the beginning of the film, in the scene where Belle is reading her book going through the town, she sits on the fountain and shows the sheep around her the "favourite part" of the book. There is a picture on the page.

Soon after, when Gaston catches up with her, he takes her book, flicks through and asks how she can read it, as there are no pictures.
