In the beginning, the group of bad cowboys are seen in several shots as they approach the McCandle's ranch. The black cook, Mose, comes outside and looks at the cowboys approaching the horse corrals and the front door area. They are only a minute or two from reaching the ranch. Meanwhile, Martha is talking to one of her hired hands when she looks out to a totally different area of the ranch and sees the cowboys. They are moving in from a different direction and are even farther off than before.
