After Garfield breaks the magic wand near the end of "Magic Mutt", a cloud of smoke appears. After he and Jon leave, Mr. Mystic uses a corded fan to clear the smoke. However, the plug-in end of the cord is clearly seen dangling from the fan.

I know that some modern electric devices such as razors have rechargeable batteries so they don't need to be plugged in at the time of use. I don't think those were too common in medium-size fans in 1988.
