In the scene where both couples are in the toy store and Rebecca (Julianne Moore) is talking about having the baby alone, Gail (Joan Cusack) refers to Rebecca as Missy not once but twice. What makes this worse is.......she awnsers to the name Missy
It's been a long time since I've seen the movie, but here's my thought: I believe that many years back, John Wayne once called a woman "Little Missy" or maybe just "Missy", which would be a semi-sarcastic way of saying "Miss". I know that I have called girls that in the past, using a John Wayne voice. Therefore, I really don't see the slip-up.
I agree with "Red 5." "Little Missy" is just a vague nickname for all girls. Joan Cusack's character is eccentric anyways, so she is the type to call people that.
I also thought about the use of "missy" among friends - like "look here, missy..." But that type of use would be out of context here. Cusack's character wasn't being sarcastic or condescending; she was comforting Moore's character. I figure there was either a cut scene where the nickname "Missy" was established OR this scene was shot very early and the character was named Missy in the original script. Seems odd that the editor would miss it twice, though...
