Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Stung by Shelob?
This comes right after Frodo escapes Shelob's Lair. He is about to walk up the stairs when he gets stung by Shelob in the chest or stomach. What happened to his mithril? It should have stopped the stinger. Later on the orc and urik hai are fighting over it, and there is no hole in it. So how did he get stung?
In the book it is said that Frodo is stung in the neck by shelob, so in that respect it is not a slip-up that his mithril coat is still in one piece and did not stop the stinger
if you notice, in the first movie, just after frodo gets nearly killed by the troll in Moria, he shows his coat to the others of the fellowship and there you can see that the coat is fairly low cut and wide necked. when he's in the watch tower in Mordor you can see the bit where Shelob stung him in the shoulder and it was in a bit where the mithril coat didn't cover.
Could be any number of explanations, really. It's assumed that Frodo was stung in the chest or abdomen, however it could have been the leg. It could be that the mithral shirt "rode up" and the stinger came in under it. Could be that the stinger had a fine enough point to slip between the mesh of the mithral (no matter how tightly woven it was). Could be that Frodo wasn't actually wearing the mithral, but had it packed away for comfort/mobility.
