well he IS part of the crew, but maybe the crews families and relatives, or maybe there were people like busboys or delivery men. un-staff people like that, so the total could of been 1,000, but only 1 hundred whatever of those were crew members
For a start it was 169. Secondly, the 169 only refered to technicians. In the real world, the writers realised that there would be more than 169 peope in a ship 8 miles long, 5 miles wide and 3 miles deep!
Oh, I'm not so sure about that. Seeing as the Space freighter Nostromo (in Alien) was an incredibly large ship and only had a crew of Seven.. but even then thats a bit understaffed. Remember: they do have the scutters who do a good portion of the maintenance. The other people could be colonists in suspended animation, or other basic civvies.
Actually is season 8 Rimmer and everyone else were throwen into the jail. But the jail was secret. I guess that all the jail birds were killed to. Hence 1000.
Well then 8D, why where prisoners being transported? Since there was prisoners, maybe they had guards watching them and thats what bumped the crew numbers up. After all, they couldn't transport prisoners like the ones they where hauling with only miners watching them.
I remember reading a piece of fan fiction years ago, before series eight, that was based around the idea that Red Dwarf was secretly transporting prisoners. I wonder where Mr. Naylor gets his ideas from...
If anyone had taken the trouble to read infinty welcomes careful drivers the number of crew is over 1000. I think Grant Naylor changed it from the original then.
I thought Rimmer said that he was the lowest technician on the ship (out of 169). The other 1000 crew members would have been made up of people who did other jobs.
It was 169 and it was changed by the writers also technically Prisoners would not be classed as crew and the comment about alien and the Nostromo is just silly that ship is set in an totally different future and it was two different parts there was a small portion which acted as the landing vehicle and then a massive section for cargo (around 90%). no more crew were needed as they all went into stasis. In Red Dwarf it was a ship used to operate only in our solar system and stasis was not required meaning that you needed catering etc
