It is Amity Island, not Amityville. That is the town with the haunted house.

They filmed Jaws in New England between April - August of 1974, New England's weather is unlike other parts of the country, it still feels like fall and doesn't really warm up until the end of the summer. But they had to shoot the film at the time because of a threat of an actor's strike.
