That was all part of the script. He was supposed to be dumb at math, which gives off the impression that he was cheap party entertainment. Look more carefully next time.
the first time i saw this episode i recall lisa commenting on him getting answer wrong. however, when i saw it again, she doesnt say anything. im wondering if they cut that part out.
