After they reach their mom's house they hide in the basement while a new 'storm' surges outside. A plane crashes (from the EM surge) however the van they used to get to the house works fine. The van should have been disabled after it had the cylanoid replaced from the previous EM pulse. The cylanoid would've been disabled again after the second EM pulse.
