In the movie Breaking Away, Dave is training for the Coors race and is cycling behind the truck heading toward Bloomington. The truck driver keeps putting his hand out to let Dave know that he is exceeding 40, 50, and then 60 MPH. At one point, the camera shows Dave's feet and the bikes crankset, the chain is on the small chainring, which would not allow Dave to pedal fast enough to reach those speeds. In addition, the road is flat, so there is no way Dave could be going upto 60 MPH. The top racers of today, with lighter bikes and better technology are not able to reach those speeds on flats.
