When they are rolling the sphere towards the Protector's shuttle on the alien planet, one of the men can be seen with a brown bag in his mouth. Maybe this was his lunch...
Not a slip-up as Fred is carrying a paper sack in other scenes, and is snacking wwhile on the shuttle.
