In this novel about early 1900s sports by Harry Stein, the main character, sportswriter Luther Pond, attends the 1910 Jack Johnson-Jim Jeffries heavyweight bout. Before the fight in Reno, Pond sees a man reading a magazine story about "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, who is leading the league in batting. Jackson's rookie season in mjaor league baseball came in 1911, when he batted .408 for Cleveland.
