In the scene towards the end of the movie when Pfeiffer's character begins to regain enough motor function to pull the drain plug and turn off the hot water, notice that she makes the knob turn counterclockwise to shut off the hot water. This direction of turn should have caused the water to flow with more force, not shut off the hot water.
