When Jimmy Stewart's character is in his old college friend's office and the friend is describing his wife's odd behavior, the friend states that she said she had driven only a little way yet her 'speedometer' said she had gone 94 miles. I don't know if it's just me, but on my car such a measurement would be taken by the 'odometer'.
This is no slipup! I watched Vertigo on AMC 6/25/00, and the scenes evoked memories like when California St. was then being dug up for rebuilding its own cablecar line (barricades and excavations.) "Odometer" in later years became familiar when attention was drawn to sellers "turning back the odometer." In 1958 it was an adjunct of the speedometer - being included in the "speedometer" overall term as a useful device to measure mileage on trips and surveillance.
Ok, that makes sense. I was wondering how something this unusual could get past all the people who would read the script before it's filmed. Chalk this one up to me being too damn young.
