Just after the aliens emerge from the ground and attack the group, they retreat into the wrecked ship. Just after the claw comes out next to Imam's head, Riddick grabs the torch and starts cutting into the wall. They show a close-up of him cutting through the wall and magically, the torch is now a plasma cutter instead.
If you have never used an acetylene torch, but have used a plasma cutter, this would be easy to mistake, but when you focus a torch tight/close enough, and boost it with enough O2, the light generated by it is indistinguishable from the light generated by a plasma cutter.
