Lonesome Dove is such a classic novel I have to kick myself to forget this one slip up... but I can't. Augustus and Woodrow travel to San Antonio while driving their heard to Montana. While waiting for a drink from an ill-tempered bartender, Augustus cracks the man with the butt of his gun and we are told he (the bartender) is never to be seen again. A few paragraphs later, Woodrow Call steps over the bartender as he is leaving the establishment. Hmmmm, apparently he materialized or they stepped over someone they couldn't see.
