In the movie, the lead detective of the case listens to the answering machine. A message has been left by Matt's sister. The answering machine gives the time-date stamp of the message. However, after he is through listening the display starts to flash "CL". On most answering machines this is an indication to set the clock.
After the message was left of the answering machine, the power could have gone out, leaving the message but losing the time on the clock. Therefore, the time would have been lost but the message would remain.
