Day After Tomorrow - Invincible Wolves?

In the scene where Sam and his two colleagues are finding Penicillin for Laura, they are being chased by wolves. If everything is freezing because it's the eye of the storm, wouldn't the wolves freeze without any protection from the cold? (Note: These are not Arctic Wolves. Arctic wolves are white, these wolves are gray-black.)

If they're in cages, we don't really know where they're from. Obviously, they don't have wolves walking around in NYC.
