In one of the early scenes when the boys are playing cards in the tree house, look at Chris(River Phoenix)'s right sleeve. There is a cigarette packet rolled up in it, which disappears for one shot and then returns.
You will notice that when Chris has the cigarette packet in his sleeve that he is not smoking. Then when the packet is gone he IS smoking. He took the packet out to light a smoke, then put the packet BACK when he had lit it.
