Butterfly Effect, The - The Knife
Early in the movie, Evan has one of his blackouts while in the kitchen. His mother walks in and sees him holding a knife. We later find out that he jumps back to this memory in an attempt to destroy the firework, where he grabs the knife. Following the movie's own rules, this never would have happened if he hadn't made the jump, and would have never been introduced in the early part of the movie.

all you're doing is stating the obvious: this wouldnt have happened if he didnt do it. you've missed your point, completely. if you are trying to say something like "why did he even go back to that particular time, the explosive whasnt at HIS house so why would he be looking for a knife?" i might be able to give you an answer. as he says when he awakens, "well THAT didnt work" (or something like that), he obviously made a mistake, that is only the second time, i believe, he travels back, and the first was an accident, so he was just trying it out and he want to the wrong event.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to state. What I believe you are asking, why did he jump to that time knowing it wouldn't work. Remember Evan has no recolection of what happened during the jumps. This would explain why he jumped to the kitchen, he figured he could use the knife to destroy the "blockbuster firecracker" but he was caught by his mom before he could stash the knife, this jump could have been just as easily been successful, if he found the knife faster

No, I get exactly what you're trying to say... I thought the same thing, actually... Now just let me try to put it into the right words... At first, when Evan is holding the knife in his kitchen, he doesn't even know about the firework yet, so why does he get the knife? Seeing him jump back to that time and get the knife makes some sense, but before the jump, there is no point in his having the knife... I have no idea if that made any sense, so if it doesn't, sorry... Just ignore it.

i understand what you are trying to say here, but this is not a slipup. the reason that he got the knife before he knew why, was because he got it in one of his blackouts, where he would give himself a chance to change that period in time. hoped it helped.
