Toy Story - Major Plot Flaw

Seeing as Buzz is initially unaware he is a toy, what exactly does he do when Andy plays with him? Would he not interact with him in entirely the same way he does with the other toys on first meeting them?

It's not like the toys have some kind of hard-wired instinct to "Go Dead", since Woody says that to scare Sid they have to "break a few rules."
