In the fourth book when harry saw Voldemort return, his father gave him the instructions on how to get away from Voldemort.

but when Harry was repeating his story to Dumbledore and Sirius, he said his mother gave him the directions.......

Not only are some things actually TRANSLATED to 'American' because apparently Americans don't believe in their own ability to decipher some of the English sayings, there are also different editors involved, meaning some mistakes in the English version will have been corrected in the US version.
