When Tod shows up at Copper's house Chief sees him and takes off- with his barrel still attached to his neck. You see Tod being chased through the woods with Chief and then the camera goes back to Copper. You will see that Chief's barrel is still on the ground next to Copper, even though Chief took off with his barrel still attached to him.
