In the beginning of the movie, when Brian is testing out his green Eclipse, you can count that he shifts 6 times, HOWEVER, after he shifts the 6th gear (which can be possible w/ the right modifications) the camera pans to the side of the car driving, you then hear the 7th shift and the sound of the RPM's going down.
