When Morpheous and Neo are in the lobby heading for the elevator, there is a blind man sitting by the wall (he is even listed as "blind man" in the credits). When Morpheous walks by, he nods in greating to the man, and the man responds!
I
think he was meant to be a fake, either as a con man or as a guard to warn the oracle when people are coming up. Maybe a referance to judging a book by it's cover.
I think that guy wasn't really blind and since he was outside where the oracle was even if he was blind I'm sure he had heightened senses just like everyone else that was around there.
My guess is two-fold:
1) The guy was not blind, but a guard for the oracle, and knowing Morpheus, did not need to keep up his facade, or
2) As a blind man, his other senses sharper as the result of the loss of one, his hearing was more acute and he heard the approach of Morpheus and Neo.
And, I agree, these responses are quite amusing.
Ill have to go with everyone else and say that he is a guard for the Oracle... that is what I thought when I first saw the Matrix...
Besides, the matrix is interpreted by your brain, it has nothing to do with your eyes, he probably 'saw' Morpheus with his mind...
Simmo
As Morpheus says "The Matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth." This isn't a slip up at all, but rather a subtle reminder of the Matrix's existance. I doubt the likelyhood of the blind man being a guard of any kind, but find it more likely that his acknowledgement of Morpheus and Neo is an indication of their significance.
not very hard to understand. the whole place is infested with people with supernatural powers, like the little kid and the spoon. the blind guy can just sense it.
Several of my friend's are blind, but they do in fact, have a sixth sense, they can tell the expressions on your face, the movements of your various body parts, even whether or not you have glasses/beard and the color of your hair...if you have any.
Just because he is registered as a "blind" man doesn't mean he can't see a thing. I have a friend who is registered blind but still has 10% vision. So this man may in fact still have a small percentage of his vision left in his eyes.
You must have forgotten what this movie is all about. This is a dream world! The whole thing is inside your mind! Who needs vision to know what's going on in that place?
I totally agree with you chris. We all make sounds while walking. Also, maybe he is a guard to tell who's coming, which explains why the door was opened. Morpheus, having taken many peopo\le to see the Oracle probably knows of this guard.

Your slip-up is just a metaphorical meaning! It has nothing to do with the fact that he can or can't see, but it's to basically prove the whole Matrix idea. I can't really explain it, but I'm so madly in love with the movie to say that it's all metaphorical.
Do you really think that's light you're seeing? hmm.
Do you think your sight has anything to do with your eye, in this place?
Come on! Stop trying to nod to me and nod to me!
Do not try and see the nod. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth.
There is no head.
Then you'll see that it is not the head that nods, but only yourself.
The old man guarding Oracle in the first movie is the previous(fifth) 'Chosen One' of the fifth Matrix. That is why he can see even though he is blind physically,Remember how Neo could see even after being blinded by Bane(possesed by Smith) in the third movie Revolutions. Thus he is the previous Chosen One.
