In the scene where Annie is stuck in the window and Lindsey picks up the phone and tells Paul Annie's washing her clothes. He tells her to go get Annie. So she puts the phone down. But doesn't hang it up. After she gets Annie out of the window they go inside and the phone rings. How could that have happened if the phone was never hung up in the first place?
I think the reason why they should the Anne not hanging up the phone and then having the phone ring is for the suspense because as you said how could the phone ring while it was off the hook, i think thats what the director wanted you to think, so it really wasn't a slip up if it was intentional.
