When the bad guy (the guy who needs puppies and wants to kill Beethoven) says he was bitten by the dog, note the blood. Later on, there is no bite mark where the blood was. That's when the dad hits him into the cage
And this is a slip-up how? The whole point was that he used fake blood to get them to think that Beethoven was dangerous, so that he could get him for research. The reason the dad hit him was *because* there were no bite marks on his arm, indicating that he had faked it. If you watch a little more closely, you can see that.
