At the beginning of the movie, when Niegel and another woman come to see the dad's artwork, the dad is just putting on his shirt. He buttons two buttons and then shakes the woman's hand. Then he turns around and they are all unbuttoned again!
OK to me this really isn't a slip-up. Maybe when he saw this pretty woman walking through the door maybe he wanted to unbutton his shirt to show a little chest hair, hinting that he likes her to give her a good first impression.
