When it's Adam's birthday, his dad says they will be going up in a couple of years, but that same night the doors unlock... Didn't he say a couple years, not a couple of hours?
He could have forgotten what year it was. They were there for quite some time.

Actually, even though it seems like the same night, the scene that shows them sleeping before the locks open the words "present day" come up on the screen. I guess this is supposed to imply that the scene just before it was a few years earlier. They didn't do a very good job showing the passage of time between the 2 scenes. If you missed the note that says, "present day" it would be easy to think that this was a slip-up.
