No it's not impossible to play one without cords. There is such a think as cordless amplifiers. I've seen them. The guitars have some sort of transmitter on them instead of a cord. It's like cordless microphones. I'm sure you've seen those.
Ray is right. Cordless/Wireless equipment and instruments such as mics, electric guitars, etc., have been in use by professional musicians for quite some time now.
