Just before the Emperor is shown disembarking onto the Death Star, there is a shot of the Death Star's exterior, with many ships flying around. Watch the lower left corner of the screen; one of the quartets of TIE fighters flies towards the edge of the screen but vanishes before it gets there. They fixed this for the Special Edition; i looked especially for it.
