Actually spelling of words has changed throughout the course of history. In those days words were spelled differently.

if you read old documents or quotes, they tack E's onto the end of some words (olde, shoppe) and put two of a letter that there now is only one of (mellon, and in this case, Brittish). in those days they did not have a standardized dictionary, however they could think to spell a word was right.
