Remember, Josh Hartnett's character was killed during the Attack on Pearl Harbor. If I remember correctly, the nurse that was taking the Purple Heart was Hartnett's characters fiancee.

When in a combat situation, and you get blood or bodily fluids of other injured soldiers, while trying to save/help them, you will most likely receive a Purple Heart. Do your research before you post an error that is incorrect.

It's probably true that Evelyn (the nurse) was accepting the medal for Danny (remember at the beginning when ben affleck said that top-secret missions were when you won medals but they had to send them to your relatives?) but if this is true, why did the nurses standing next to evelyn get purple hearts too?

At that time, being wounded wasn't a requirement for being awarded the Purple Heart. The rules changed during WWII.

You don’t get Purple Hearts for getting fluids on you. Since 1917 you get them for being wounded in combat. The Pearl Harbor attack took place on Dec. 7, 1941. If an award is being awarded posthumously and given to a family member, the award is not pinned on the family member, they are handed the award. The movie attempts to depict the Purple Heart medal as a medal of valor.
