During the part of the movie staged on the train, the driver has an assistant with red hair. He dies trying to hook up an air cord. However, later in the movie with the African-American police officer leading the people in the Fire Truck, the fire truck driver is clearly the same person! It's soooo obvious!
The engineer's assistant never died...only the two men from the brake-van did...(ha! brake-van! I crack myself up! HA! crack! I'd better write these down!)
One of the men was struck after falling off and being run over, and the other died from the car "kaliedoscoping" (sp?) with the rest of the train. The engineer's assistant waited for the train to slow down, and merely hopped off...unless there's an uncensored version out there...I had only seen it on television...
Acually, the engineers' assistant hops off the LEAD engine, stands there, and then climbs back onto the second engine. He then goes down the train and tries to re-connect the air. He falls off and gets hit by the train cars.
